#OWSCyCon2019 Author Spotlight
As part of the build-up to OWSCyCon2019, I want to introduce you to some of the amazing volunteers and authors taking part in the event. If it wasn’t for the volunteers, there could be no CyCon, and I’m grateful to every single one of them for giving up their time to make this happen. But by the same token, without the authors taking part in the event, we wouldn’t be able to bring you the amazing events that we have planned. So without further delay…
Meet Aziza Sphinx
Aziza Sphinx is a firm believer that reading and writing go hand in hand. A southerner through and through she loves her peaches and pecans while curling up with a good book. A master of resourcefulness, her love of research leads her down paths of discovery that touch every aspect of her writing. Her love of reading ignited her passion for writing leading her to frequently fill page after page with tales of her beloved characters’ adventures. An influence and an adversary she loves to sprinkle facts about her beloved Georgia throughout her fictional worlds.
What Genres Do You Write In?
Why don't you start by telling us a little about yourself
I’m a techie by trade and a writer by necessity. I started my career writing song lyrics and after way too many years in the music industry transitioned into full length novels. I am far from a girlie girl and prefer to spend my time at the drag strip rather than cuties dates though I do have an affinity for walking on the beach and waterfalls.
Could you tell us a bit about your latest book?
My latest work is a short story that is part of the Terminus Anthology. It is an introduction to my Wraith series character Lavenia Stokes. The story follows her through collected the soul of rogue reaper stealing time from people in Atlanta.
Who is your intended readership?
I definitely write for a mature reading audience. My books lean more towards high fantasy and high concept fantasy so the language used would be more like Lord of the Rings with a bit of Edgar Allen Poe sprinkled in. My fantasy is layered, dark, and foreboding and less of a popular fiction feel and more complex literature. I write for readers who seek the story behind the story and a deeper understanding of other perspectives of life and death.
When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
I never had an “ah ha” moment defining the idea of being a writer. It is something that has always been in me in one format or another. The voices in my head have been incessant as far back as I can remember. Eventually I needed to write their stories for my own sanity and so I did.
Do you have a favorite author, or writing inspiration?
I go through ebbs and flows with authors. I still have a love for L.A. Banks (RIP) and her Huntress series motivates me to keep going. I am finding inspiration at the moment in Kelly Armstrong’s Cainsville series and Dayrnda Jones.
What advice would you give beginning writers?
Write and read as much as you can. Write what you love and what you wish to read that you don’t find in the market. Understand why it is you write and determine if you see for you a difference between being a writer and being an author (and yes these are two different things).
Do you have any amusing writing stories or anecdotes to share?
Well my favorite line I have written so far in my career is “Death don’t do shopping.” I still chuckle when I think about it, trying to picture Death himself walking into a lingerie store to purchase frilly panties for his bedmate.
What do you like to do when you're not writing? Any hobbies?
I’m definitely an outdoors person. I love racing so people might find me at the drag strip or seeking out a new place to try drifting. I am also a fan of the 600 stair challenge of Amicalola Falls in North Georgia. Definitely worth the work for the views.
What’s your next project? Any upcoming book secrets you care to reveal?
I am currently working on book 2 of my Wraith of Reapers series scheduled for a double release in October 2019. The series is about what happens when Death breaks The Rules and splits his power among others. Reapers are going rogue so Death gathers a band of wraiths to clean up his mess.
