My Top-5 Artificial Intelligences

Top 5 Artificial Intelligences

As part of the OWS CyCon events I’ve teamed up with the Science Fiction genre authors to bring you some amazing blog posts. I’m bringing you my top five Artificial Intelligences, as part of a series of Top-5s from the genre.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. It is also the name of the academic field of study which studies how to create computers and computer software that are capable of intelligent behavior.

Deep Thought

  • Origins: Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy
  • Sources: Book/TV/Radio/Movie
  • Reason for Inclusion: For calculating “The Ultimage Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything” but not being able to provide the question!

Deep Thought is a computer that was created by a pan-dimensional, hyper-intelligent species of beings (whose three-dimensional protrusions into our universe are ordinary white mice) to come up with the Answer to The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. Deep Thought is the size of a small city. When, after seven and a half million years of calculation, the answer finally turns out to be 42, Deep Thought admonishes Loonquawl and Phouchg (the receivers of the Ultimate Answer) that "[she] checked it very thoroughly, and that quite definitely is the answer. I think the problem, to be quite honest with you is that you've never actually known what the question was."Deep Thought does not know the ultimate question to Life, the Universe and Everything, but offers to design an even more powerful computer, Earth, to calculate it. After ten million years of calculation, the Earth is destroyed by Vogons five minutes before the computation is complete.

The Red Queen

  • Origins: Resident Evil
  • Sources: Movie Series
  • Reason for Inclusion: For being down-right scary, despite having the appearance of a little girl.

The Red Queen Computer System is a highly advanced and self-aware computer created by the Umbrella Corporation... Its primary objective is overseeing and protection of Umbrella assets. Secondary objective is protection of Umbrella officer lives... Its third objective is unknown because Albert Wesker destroyed the computer screen before it was revealed... Its holographic avatar was modeled after Alicia Marcus, daughter of Dr. James Marcus, the original founder of the Umbrella Corporation.

Data

  • Origins: Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • Sources: TV/Movie
  • Reason for Inclusion: The ultimate modern-day Pinocchio, who never fails to entertain, and provoke thought. This inclusion MIGHT be considered a cheat, but he has an adaptability that makes him more than just a robot.

Data was found by Starfleet in 2338 as the sole survivor on Omicron Theta in the rubble of a colony left after an attack from the Crystalline Entity. He was a synthetic life form with artificial intelligence and designed and built by Doctor Noonien Soong in his own likeness (likewise portrayed by Spiner). Data is a self-aware, sapient, sentient and anatomically fully functional android who serves as the second officer and chief operations officer aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise-D and later the USS Enterprise-E. His positronic brain allows him impressive computational capabilities. He experienced ongoing difficulties during the early years of his life with understanding various aspects of human behavior and was unable to feel emotion or understand certain human idiosyncrasies, inspiring him to strive for his own humanity. This goal eventually led to the addition of an "emotion chip" created by Soong, to Data's positronic net. Although Data's endeavor to increase his humanity and desire for human emotional experience is a significant plot point (and source of humor) throughout the series, he consistently shows a nuanced sense of wisdom, sensitivity, and curiosity, garnering respect from his peers and colleagues.

hal-9000-eye[1]

Hal 9000

  • Origins: 2001, 2010, 2061, 3001
  • Sources: Book/Movie
  • Reason for Inclusion: What happens when a computer is given contradictory directives? I sometimes wonder just how much of the trouble was caused my conflicting mission priorities.

HAL (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) is a sentient computer (or artificial general intelligence) that controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and interacts with the ship's astronaut crew... HAL speaks in a soft, calm voice and a conversational manner, in contrast to the crewmen, David Bowman and Frank Poole... In addition to maintaining the Discovery One spacecraft systems during the interplanetary mission to Jupiter (or Saturn in the novel), HAL is capable of speech, speech recognition, facial recognition, natural language processing, lip reading, art appreciation, interpreting emotional behaviours, automated reasoning, and playing chess.

Holly

  • Origins: Red Dward
  • Sources: TV
  • Reason for Inclusion: Regardless of the actor playing the part, Holly was fallible, prone to errors of judgement, but often funnier then the other members of the crew.

Holly is the ship's Tenth Generation AI hologrammatic computer. After releasing Dave Lister from stasis, Holly told him that the crew have been wiped out by a radiation leak and that he had spent three million years in stasis. Holly prides himself on the fact he had an IQ of 6,000, but after three million years by himself, he had become computer senile, or as Holly put it, "a bit peculiar". The crew often ridicule Holly on his senility, but Holly often comes out on top. He often plays practical jokes on the crew, such as fooling Lister into thinking that NORWEB Federation space fighters were after him and wanted £180 billion in arrears for leaving his bathroom light on three million years ago, as well as wanting to arrest him for "Crimes against Humanity" as he had left some German sausages alone in his apartment for three million years and they now covered 7/8 of the Earth's surface. This love of practical jokes culminated in his generating an alternate personality, Queeg, and passing him off as the ship's backup computer which was seizing control of the ship. Holly always speaks in a droll, slightly monotonous, and quiet voice, even when sounding alarms, which consist of himself speaking simply "Ding-dong. There's an emergency going on. (pauses) It's still going on." and repeating as much. He often greets the crew with "All right dudes?" Among his achievements was the invention of Hol Rock, where he decimalised music (having ten notes instead of eight — although he admits that this would result in "piano keyboards being the width of a zebra crossing, and women being banned from playing the cello"). He also wrote an A-Z guide of the Universe.

Evaline

  • Origins: Evaline Transcendent
  • Sources: Book
  • Reason for Inclusion: It’d be rude not to include my own creation. The decisions Evaline makes might just save, or doom, her precious cargo of colonists. Will she make the right choices?

Evaline is the shipboard computer on the Miranda Two, a colony ship destined for the planet Karman-III-Delta. She is possibly Earth’s last hope of establishing a working off-world colony. However, her predecessor stopped reporting home, so now she and the colonists must establish what happened to the previous colony.

The Miranda Two has been traveling for twenty years, and now it’s time for Evaline to wake the crew and colonists in preparation or arrival at their destination. Can Evaline and the crew figure out what happened to the Miranda One expedition, and what price will they have to pay for the answers?

This is the most perfect top five! I don’t think Data is a cheat and Holly and Deep Thought are musts in any top five AI list.
