#OWSCyCon2019 Author Spotlight

As part of the build-up to OWSCyCon2019, I want to introduce you to some of the amazing volunteers and authors taking part in the event. If it wasn’t for the volunteers, there could be no CyCon, and I’m grateful to every single one of them for giving up their time to make this happen. But by the same token, without the authors taking part in the event, we wouldn’t be able to bring you the amazing events that we have planned. So without further delay…

Author Spotlight - Barbara White

Barbara White is a stay at home mom of twenty six years. She lives in a small town in southern Iowa with her husband Kevain, two of her four children and a small, yapping Miniature Pinscher named Bella.

She was born in 1971 in Davenport Iowa and discovered a passion for fantasy books in her early teens. In her early adult life she began writing books in her spare time and wrote six books, which only her mother and her children have ever read. Through the course of life, those books have been lost but, still inspired, she began a new series.

Shadows of Night: Shadow Lord Series Book 1 is the first published book in that series, and Shadows of Light: Shadow Lords Series Book 2 is her work in progress now.

What Genres Do You Write In?

Why Don't You Start By Sharing A Little About Yourself

My name is Barbara White. I live in Iowa, in the middle of nowhere basically, with my husband Kevain, who has never read my book. He does support me as an Author and is proud to promote me and my book though.

I have four children, who range in age from my oldest son, who is twenty seven years old, to my youngest son, who is six years old. I also have two daughters in between.

When I am not writing I like to travel. I’ve been to 47 states in the U.S. and am hoping to get to the last three soon. After that, I would love to start seeing the rest of the world, if possible.  Most of the time, I am a stay at home mom though and enjoy reading, quilting, painting and ceramics.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest book?

Shadows of Night: Shadow Lords Series Book 1 is my first published book and the first in a Series that is planned for 5 books in total, hopefully.

It is the story of a magical transformation in Sarah and David, who are then thrown into a secret magical world hidden within the Rocky Mountains where they all have wings and can use magic. Sarah and David’s journey into this world reveals they are the two named in prophecy with the Blood Magic that can release the Shadows Lords, whose only ambition is to rule and dominate, from their thousand year prison.

They will try to keep their blood from falling into the hands of those who wish to release the Shadow Lords and their Shadow Magic back into the world again and to find a way to defeat them should they be released…but can they learn and strengthen their magic before that happens?

Who is your intended readership?

My intended readership is anyone who enjoys fantasy books. My book overlaps several subgenres in that category. It encompasses the epic, slightly dark, urban, sword and sorcery genres and may well cover more that I am unaware of.  My audience does not include those into erotic, romance or vampire/werewolf topics.

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

I have always loved reading and voraciously read any book I could. In my early teens I fell in love with fantasy writing and the worlds they created. As a young adult, in my early twenties, I found that I had my own stories in my head that I wanted to write and share with others. I wanted to create a world of my own for other people to be fascinated and entertained.

Do you have a favorite author, or writing inspiration?

The authors that first created the passion for fantasy writing for me were Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman with the Dragonlance Series, followed closely by Terry Brooks,(Shanara Series) Terry Goodkind (Sword of Truth Series), R.A. Salvatore (Dark Elf Series) and Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time Series).

What advice would you give beginning writers?

I would tell beginning authors to read other authors in their genre and get a feel for that genre but to keep their own originality. Write what you love and write for the love of writing.

What do you like to do when you're not writing? Any hobbies?

When I’m not writing I love to read, of course, quilt, paint , ceramics and to travel. I have been to 47 states in the U.S. and am hoping to get to the last three soon and after that I would love to go overseas and start seeing the rest of the world, or as much of it as I can.

What’s your next project? Any upcoming book secrets you care to reveal?

My next book is Shadows of Light: Shadow Lords Series Book 2 where Skylan will finish undergoing his transformation and learn how to adjust to his new circumstances.  The last Blood Key Pair companion is realized and will be accidentally bonded with two of the other companions (and if you read the first book then you know that’s impossible) and The Blood Magic to open the Shadow Lords prison will be obtained in a very unexpected manner.

Shadows of Night:

Shadow Lords Series Book 1

Shadows of Night - Cover

The Shadow Lords will return.

Sarah and David were orphaned at two years old on the same day when both Sarah and David’s parents were tragically killed in a mysterious plane crash together. Placed in an orphanage where they lived a typical normal life for twelve years together their lives are about to be suddenly and drastically changed when a confrontation with a school bully causes a frightening change in Sarah. Transforming, out of rage, into a creature with blue skin, talons and wings begins their journey into a secret, fascinating world of winged people where magic is normal and myth is real…but even in this wondrous new world there are prophecies of a returning ancient evil.

The Shadow Lords, whose dark magic and lust for power can only be brought back by the Blood Magic of one particular pair. With the help of the Black Riders, whose goals are to free the Shadow Lords and their magic back into the world, the prophecies are in danger of being fulfilled when it is found that it is Sarah and David’s blood they seek.

Thrown into a world where their blood is sought out for evil, there is still hope as they are also the ones with the potential  to destroy the Shadow Lords but first they must learn their own talents, magical power and strength and join with five companions of their own kind before the Shadow Lords are released in order to learn enough to lead the war against the Shadow Lords, Black Riders and their followers. Will they have the time, the skill, the strength, the power and the love to save them all?
