#OWSCyCon2019 Author Spotlight

As part of the build-up to OWSCyCon2019, I want to introduce you to some of the amazing volunteers and authors taking part in the event. If it wasn’t for the volunteers, there could be no CyCon, and I’m grateful to every single one of them for giving up their time to make this happen. But by the same token, without the authors taking part in the event, we wouldn’t be able to bring you the amazing events that we have planned. So without further delay…

What Genres Do You Write In?

Why Don't You Start By Sharing A Little About Yourself

It never occurred to me that I would ever write comics when I first started to write fiction. However, I need to back up the question a bit and tell you a bit about how Boston Metaphysical Society (“BMS”) came to be. It was originally a TV Pilot that I wrote at UCLA while I was in the MFA Program in Screenwriting. I shopped it around, got good feedback, but this was before steampunk became mainstream and no one would pick it up. A friend suggested I turn it into a graphic novel to use as ancillary marketing material. Little did I know that in the process of learning how to write a comic and about the business I would fall in love with indie comics and the community. (Note the “indie” part.)

Could you tell us a bit about your latest book?

Boston Metaphysical Society: A Storm of Secrets is a prequel to my original graphic novel, Boston Metaphysical Society. The graphic novel is about an ex-Pinkerton detective, a spirit photographer, and a genius scientist who battle supernatural forces in late 1800s Boston. The novel can be read as a standalone.

Who is your intended readership?

Anyone who loves alternate history, the paranormal, steampunk, or just a good thriller.

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

Lois McMaster Bujold. I think she is amazing and I found my initial inspiration from her. I have new favorites now like John Scalzi, Elizabeth Moon, and Jack Campbell.

Do you have a favorite author, or writing inspiration?

Lois McMaster Bujold. I think she is amazing and I found my initial inspiration from her. I have new favorites now like John Scalzi, Elizabeth Moon, and Jack Campbell.

What advice would you give beginning writers?

Writing is rewriting. Just get that first draft down. Also, find a good writing class that provides constructive yet supportive criticism. And don’t be afraid of doing a page one rewrite if it makes the story better.

Do you have any amusing writing stories or anecdotes to share?

While I was sitting in the UCLA campus lounge at Melnitz, a friend literally leaped over the couch, plopped down next to me and said, “Steampunk.” I said, “What?” He said, “Have you thought about this story being set in a a steampunk universe?” I hadn’t, but I did some research and discovered he was right. I then developed Boston Metaphysical Society as a steampunk universe. Amazing how one word can change your life.

What do you like to do when you're not writing? Any hobbies?

I love reading, hitting the gym, and gardening.

What’s your next project? Any upcoming book secrets you care to reveal?

The most exciting news is that Source Point Press picked up the original six issue mini-series and will be re-publishing it. The first issue will be in the Diamond Previews Catalogue and will be available to order from your local comic book in May 2019.

I will also be writing another standalone graphic novel this year for publication in 2020. I’ll also be running a Kickstarter campaign in early 2020 for that project. And this month I’ll be starting to a trilogy based in the Boston Metaphysical universe called , The House Wars. It will be my version of the American Civil War.

The first issue of the original series will be in the Diamond distribution catalogue in May, which means comic lovers will be able to order it from their local comic book store.

Boston Metaphsical 01 - Cover

Politics and power. Demons and spirits.

When ex-Pinkerton detective Samuel Hunter married Elizabeth Weldsmore, the heir to one of Boston’s Great Houses, he knew his life would change forever, but he never expected the return of Elizabeth’s psychic abilities.

Not only do they have to keep it a secret, but Elizabeth must learn quickly how to master them. For a psychic in a Great House is a political liability which her father, Jonathan Weldsmore, knows only too well.

As the Great Houses jockey for power, the three of them must contend with treachery, subterfuge, and potentially a new demonic threat, in this political and supernatural thriller set in an alternate-history Boston of 1890.

This novel is a prequel to the original graphic novel series, Boston Metaphysical Society.
